Our History:

Shandong University (SDU) has been renowned for its unique strength in liberal arts programs, so humanities and social sciences education and research have always played an important role in the development of SDU in the history of more than a century. Journalistic education in SDU originated from the Journalistic Specialized Training class in the 1960s. The class resumed its enrollment in 1985. In 1996, the full-time undergraduate program was reopened after Shandong University applied successfully for that program. The Department of Journalism, subordinate to the School of Literature, was established in 1997 andformallystarted undergraduate enrollment in Journalism. In 2000 when a newly-merged Shandong University was established, the School of Literature changed its name to be the School of Literature and Journalism. It was authorized to initiate an MA degree program on journalism in the same year, and on Communication and Artistic Design (Visual Culture and Communication) in 2004. The school, among the first group, was qualified for granting Master’s degree in Journalism and Communication as a first-level discipline in 2006, and afterwards for doctorate authorization in 2010. Now the school is one of 16 doctorate authorization units in the first-level discipline of Journalism and Communication. The school was also among the first units for MA degree program on Journalism and Communication (MJC) in China in 2010. The school was awarded a Post-doctoral Research Station of Journalism and Communication in 2014. In 2016, the School of Journalism and Communication was established independently, and meanwhile, the Shandong University TV Station was put completely under the organization system of the School of Journalism and Communication. The school of Journalism and Communication was built independently in 2016 and the TV Station of Shandong University was placed under it. The Dean of the school now is Prof. Lv Peng, the Director and Party Secretary of Shandong Radio and Television Station. The Party Secretary of the school is PhD Supervisor Prof. Wang Desheng.


Our Discipline:

In the course of more than a decade of restructuring, the discipline of Journalism and Communication in Shandong University gradually developed an integrated and exclusive personnel training system in Shandong Province to foster talents as “Bachelors (undergraduate programs)—Masters (graduate programs)—doctors (postgraduate programs)—Post-doctoral Research”.

Now the School of Journalism and Communication in Shandong University offers PhD degree programs on the first-level discipline of Journalism and Communication (including two second-level disciplines of doctoral programs respectivelyonJournalism and Communication), MA degree programs on the discipline of Journalism and Communication (including two second-level disciplines of MA degree programs respectively on Journalism and Communication), professional master's degrees in Journalism and Communication, master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Design, professional master's degrees in Art Design, as well as Journalism undergraduate program and Advertising undergraduate program. The major of Journalism and Communication has been confirmed by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Education as a key major “jointly built by governmental departments and universities”, while the discipline of Art Design was taken as a provincial key discipline.


Our People:

At present, the School of Journalism and Communication has 23 full-time faculty members, including 10 professors and 7 associate professors, and 5 of them are doctoral supervisors and 16 of them are master supervisors (doctoral supervisors included). There are14 faculty members under 45 (61%), 19 doctoral degree holders (83%), and 12 scholars with one or more years of overseas experience (52%). Generally speaking, the staff members have high-level academic qualifications, a reasonable age scale, an international perspective and great development potential.


Current Things:

In terms of academic research, the School of Journalism and Communication of Shandong University has given full play to sound environment in Shandong University which features a complete range of academic disciplines and a strong research capacity to have achieved strong academic strength and distinctive characteristics in the researches of public opinion work, public communication and public management, cultural communication, video communication, new media, and media operation and management etc. At present, the school has Shandong Provincial Brand and Communication Research Base (provincial key social science research base), the Communication and Media Research Center of Shandong University, the Big Data and Precision Communication Laboratory of Shandong University and many other scientific research institutions.

As for the international communication, the discipline of Journalism and Communication in our school has established close cooperation with high-level scientific research and teaching institutions in America, British, France, Korea and many other countries. In addition todispatching teachers to attend international conferences and take field trips and selecting students on exchange and study trips to universities both at home and abroad, ourschool has also invited many noted scholars and media and industry celebrities such as high-level foreign teachers and senior reporters to give lectures or directly teach postgraduate courses.

In the aspect of industry communication, Journalism and Communication discipline in our school has established teaching field bases in state media groups such as CCTV and Dazhong News Group, provincial media groups such as Shandong Radio and TV Station, and other relative enterprises and institutions. Meanwhile we have employed 39 experts of high professional proficiency and academic level, 13 part-time master’s supervisor and 26 industry teachers, helping with students’ internship and practice.

In recent years, the School of Journalism and Communication has received all-round teaching and research support from Publicity Department, Education Department and Shandong University. At present, the School of Journalism and Communication of Shandong University has been one of the 10 Journalism schools in colleges and universities co-established with the local publicity, designated by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and Ministry of Education in 2013, and also one of the 16 subordinate college journalism and communication liberal arts practice education base construction units approved by the Ministry of Education in 2013.
